Don’t mind if I do. I currently live in Alaska. The mountain valley that Asha’s family calls home is directly inspired by one of my favorite places in Alaska. This picture is one I took in the fall of 2025.
I grew up in a small town nestled in the corn and potato fields of Michigan. I joined the Army when I was 17 and had the best, worst times of my life for 7 years.
The Army brought me my husband, some of the best friends I have ever had, my first D&D campaigns, and chronic back pain. It also gave me a deep appreciation for the way God often intertwines His good gifts with the bad or difficult things of this world so tightly that if you avoid the latter, you will miss the former. My time in the Army also reinforced my firm belief that almost nothing has a simple solution, but an inappropriate joke will probably help.
After I separated from the service, I put my flight medic skills to work as a medical assistant at a small family practice for 2 years until I had my son. Then I quit to be a full-time mom.
While I was sitting at home with no adults to speak to, rocking a colicky baby to sleep over and over again, I found myself delving back into my childhood love for telling stories. My adult life had been so rich, so busy, so fast that I hadn’t realized that my mind was screaming tales that I needed to tell.
The Chosen One’s Substitute is the first of those stories that I have finished and published. But it will not be the last, I am currently planning this as a 4-book series, but I already have an idea for a prequel, a short story collection and a completely unrelated fairytale retelling based in my most obnoxious cat.
